To the Ends of the Earth

Recently, I was able to travel to Copenhagen, Denmark for the first time. It was quite an adventure for me as I have never in my life been that far north and I was totally unfamiliar with the culture and language. Despite the discomfort of going somewhere so new and unfamiliar, it was during this trip that I was reminded of one of the most beautiful and comforting truths of our faith and of a life lived with Jesus.

On Sunday morning, my friends and I found a Cathedral in the heart of the city. From the moment that I walked into the church and saw the little red lamp next to Jesus present in the tabernacle, I was overcome with the awareness that even though I was over 4,000 miles from my house, I was home. I felt overcome with great joy, peace, and comfort all throughout Mass. I had come all the way across the world to a totally new place, and Jesus still wanted to make himself physically present to me in the Eucharist.

How incredible! Even when we go to opposite ends of the earth, the Lord will follow us there! Even more so, Jesus pursues each one of us when we are spiritually, emotionally, or mentally distant from him. No matter how far away we run from him, no matter what things take the place of Jesus in our hearts, and no matter how many times we choose what we want over him, Jesus is present to us, loving us, and pursuing us.

Maybe right now some of us are feeling distant from the Lord. Maybe you are struggling to understand why God would let something happen. Maybe you are too busy to have any time to pray or even think about praying. Maybe you are simply feeling unmotivated to grow in a relationship with Jesus. Maybe you just can’t believe that God could possibly forgive you for what you did. No matter what it is that is making you feel far from the Lord, he is still near to you and holding you, and you need only to lean into his loving embrace.

This makes me think of one of my favorite Psalms which says,

“Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, you are there. If I take the wings of the dawn, if I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will lay hold of me.” (Psalm 139)

There is nowhere too far for the Lord to find you and recklessly pursue you. He wants to whisper his eternal love to you, and he is carrying you even when you feel so far away from him. He is always ready to welcome us back, forgive us, love us, find us. No matter where you have been or where you are now, Jesus is present there.
