I was recently confirmed into the Catholic Church, and I became an adult in the eyes of the Church. When the Bishop put the chrism oil on my forehead, I expected to receive the gift of tongues when I sat down again. As you can probably guess, that's not what happened. I really wanted to speak in tongues, I expected to. But, God had another plan for me. When we expect things of someone, we will almost always be disappointed, because humans will forever fall short of expectations. Now, you may be asking, “So are you saying that God will fall short of our expectations?” Actually, in a way, He will, not because He isn’t able, but because we are human.
I expected God to give me something that He didn't want to give me at that time. But I trust that He will find something better for me. God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are bursting at the seams with surprises. Hmm...I think I'll go to the mall today. BAM! Your friend who you were going with gets sick and can't go anymore. I guess I'll just go by myself. BAM! The car is out of gas. Maybe I could just walk to the mall. BAM! You can't find your shoes. Notice a pattern? God made that pattern. So stop for a minute, quiet your mind and see if God wants you to do something else.
*Challenge: Think of your favorite song. Now think of all the bad and good parts of that song. Find a way to re-make that song into a good message. At the next Beloved meeting, feel free to share any part of this challenge.
