The Truth About Beauty

I've often wondered why women struggle with understanding the truth about beauty. Why are we so susceptible to believing the lies that beauty comes from our flesh alone? I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on the subject, but after a little bit of thinking and whole lot of praying, I've come up with a theory.

The first thing we need to understand is that Satan is the source of the lies we believe about beauty. Any thoughts or beliefs that we will be beautiful if we are a smaller size, if we wear a different outfit, or if we look more like another girl are straight up lies and we need to crush them. Beauty isn't something we have to earn; it is something that we are. Any thought or belief to the contrary of that simply isn't true.

So why does Satan lie to us about beauty? Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen said, "The level of any civilization is the level of its womanhood." Wait, what? We are the measure of civilization? Talk about a powerful statement! He goes on to say that this power comes from the woman's ability to be love and to call others on to love. Sisters, we are powerful because we love. This great level of power really ticks Satan off and he wants to take it away from us.

If you think about it, the lies Satan feeds us about beauty are based on vanity. When we spend our time looking in the mirror a million times a day, fussing over what to wear, and comparing ourselves to the women around us, we are spending all of our time and energy focusing on ourselves. When we do this, we can't look at other people, which means that we can't love.

Love is the willing or wanting of the best for the other person. Love requires us to look outside of self. This is why Satan traps us in the lies about beauty. He knows that if he can get us caught up in ourselves that we can't possibly be love. As a result, our power is lost.

So what do we do about it? One of my favorite quotes is: "Be the kind of woman that when your feet hit the floor in the morning the devil says, 'Oh crap, she's up.'" Sisters, will you be that kind of woman with me? Will you be the kind of woman who knows the truth about where her power and beauty comes from? Will you be the kind of woman that wakes up daily with a mission to be love in this world?

We are beautiful because we love. We are powerful because we love. Don't you dare believe anything else!
